I have been thinking…
Why would the native language of your country not be compulsory in schools? Not only the language but also the culture.
In NZ we are supposedly proud of our heritage and our indigenous culture. However this does not translate into real actions. We have a wonderful opportunity to embrace the Maori Language and culture and ensure that it thrives.
I do not buy into the argument that chinese or Japanese should be taught ahead of Maori. How can you take that argument seriously. Compulsory Maori is about focusing learning on what is important. Remember education is about learning to learn.
Let’s have a real debate and make a plan to make this happen. Too much hui and not enough dui!
