In the article entitled Building Your Company’s Vision(1996), the authors define a BHAG (pronounced BEE-hag) as a form of vision statement “…an audacious 10-to-30-year goal to progress towards an envisioned future.”
I have been studying BHAG’s for a while. The definition was really created for a corporate purpose. A couple of examples:
“A computer on every desk and in every home.”- Microsoft
“Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”- Google
To become “the pulse of the planet.”- Twitter
It is my belief that we should all have a personal BHAG. A goal that defines us and is important to us. Something we are passionate about and something we can control (to some degree). I have written about goal setting before. But I think the BHAG should be more than this. It needs to be somewhat realistic and achievable but it should be very ambitious and something that makes us go WOW with excitement when we think about achieving it. It also needs to be in the future, not next week but something that we plan to work towards over the next few years.
Something for you to think about. It doesn’t need to be related to sport of course. It could be your career or anything. Whether you share it with others is up to you. I’m not scared to say that mine is to total 1000 kg raw.
